Frequent Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Thin needles are used to regulate our energy flow, internal organ functions, and energy pathways called “meridian”.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture improves the body's functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites--commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin.

How does acupuncture relieve pain?

Traditional Chinese acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into the skin at specific "acupoints." This may relieve pain by releasing endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing chemicals, and by affecting the part of the brain that governs serotonin, a brain chemical involved with mood.

Why should i try acupuncture?

Acupuncture and TCM take a holistic, or whole-body approach to health. This means your acupuncturist will take into account your whole self, not just your symptoms, in order to get to the root of your health concerns. You will work together to find out how factors like your lifstyle and emotional and mental well-being may be affecting your health.

Is acupuncture painful?

While the experience will be different for everyone, acupuncture usually doesn't cause discomfort or pain, Once a needle reaches its intended depth, you're likely to feel a mild, dull ache or a slight tingling sensation. This may be a sign that the treatment is working and the acupuncture point is being activated.

What should you not do before acupuncture?

It is best not to receive acupuncture on an empty stomach. However, do not eat a heavy meal before or after the session. Also, refrain from using caffeine or alcohol for several hours before and after the treatment.
